Week 7, Day 5

Yes, I skipped a bunch of days.  I have been really busy and TIRED!!  So, sitting down to do this in the morning doesn't work and in the evening after kids go to bed doesn't work.  Will try harder because I suspect I will find this very useful looking back.

I shopped yesterday.

Costco: 40.74
Milk (2 gallons 1%) $5.39
Saltines crackers (12 packs) $4.99
Pot Roasts (2 of them) $ 18.39  (I actually look for the smallest ones and it always seems to be enough and Jason vacuum packs the second for the freezer)
Celery $2.99 (for 4 hearts of celery which seems wasteful to buy in the regular grocery store but is so cheap it is worth it at Costco)
Potatoes, gold $8.99 (15 pounds)

Real Produce: $3.00 (11 Persian cucumbers) they are getting smaller and more expensive

Whole Foods: $7.99 (Pero, extra dark roast)
This is for us to take to Idaho as making teecino when Elsie has actual coffee to make will be challenging

Nob Hill: $31.34
Penne: 1.50 (pasta prices have skyrocketed.  This summer $1 or $1.09 was the sale price not it is $1.50 or $1.69)
4 Farmhouse Pasta Meals $6.00 (Cress and I are struggling with lunch when we are at Open Gym until noon or otherwise out so we got quite a bit of boxed meals as an experiment - otherwise we grab a dollar burger at McD's)
2 Knorr Rice Sides $3.00
Mahatma Beans & Rice $3.78 (different brand is cheaper so I thought we would try)
2 Broccoli & Rice (Raley's brand Rice-a-Roni) $3.00
Thai Curry Rice $2.99
Thai Kitchen Rice $2.99
Bananas, yellow 4.69 pounds for $3.19
Bananas, red 1.36 pounds for $1.21

Both of the Thai rices were priced the same at Whole Foods but they had many more options of that type.

Total: $83.07

While we are under for the week, there was a Christmas tree, there will be extra gas to go to Idaho, there was pizza and beer for games night on Saturday with Elise, Sam and Linda as our guests, etc.  Holiday spending.  :)

We leave Saturday morning for Idaho.  I expect we will buy some food in Idaho but that will be next week.  Our fridge and cupboards have been pretty lean, especially on need-a-quick-dinner nights.

Last night we had pot roast with Bennett.  We have some beets from leftovers and some Raley's bread and Martinelli's with it.  I do not have that receipt (Jason picked it up) but I would guess about $5 bringing the total to $88.07.

Tonight we will eat at the Castros.  Jason should be happy.  They have leftover Mexican food from her nephews graduation party and we were going to have oregano chicken.

Meal plan is baked ziti and green beans for Wednesday.  Potato soup for Thursday and chicken or beef stew for Friday.  We hope to pack food for our drive.  Bread, peanut butter, produce, jelly, puffed corn and milk, maybe?  Not sure but we  want to limit our fast food consumption since it $20 a pop for our family usually.

Week 6, Day 4

For breakfast we had oatmeal.  I was moving slowly so Dai started it.  Cress was mad because I wouldn't give her raisins.  When  asked "Who wants raisins?" she did not answer.  Do I know that she wanted them?  Sure.  At lunch she was picking at her leftovers so I offered her oatmeal.  The kids also got cookies for lunch dessert/after school snack.

Also, Steve gave us a variety of cereal bars, protein bars, etc.  I let them have one with breakfast and after school.

For lunch I ate black bean layers and some of the brownies that Jason made last night.

For dinner we will have PBJ's because we have to have Phyllis downtown by 6:15 for Girl Scouts.  They are seeing their tree at Christmas in the Park.  Jason will run out to get the snake so I will take the other kid to Christmas in the Park.  Jason will just cover the snake with blankets in the back of the car when he picks us up again. We will keep it in the closet until Christmas day.

Oh, and we are using the wheat bread Jason made for sandwiches.  It is the same kind he made before that I raved about.  I cannot remember the name.  Hearth bread?  We will also have Gouda and apples with dinner.

Week 6, Day 3

Jason made puffed oven pancake this morning for a late breakfast.  He made two double batches (12 eggs total) and cooked them sequentially.  We ate so late that we did not have lunch but just a 4 PM dinner.

Last night before going to bed I had cooked the black beans that had been soaking the day away.  This morning I added the stuff to make soup.  Then about 3 PM moved them from the pressure cooker to a pan and cooked rice in my pressure cooker using up the last of my white rice.  We ate black bean layers.  Actually, the kids, did.  Jason and I had rice with butter and salt and pepper.

Week 6, Days 1 and 2

Fresh week (but truthfully I am behind already!!)

Friday we had cold cereal for breakfast.  Cressida and I had beans and rice for lunch.

For dinner we went to the Ward Christmas Party.  We invited the Tervalons and they did come with us.  But Al expressed a little nervousness at going to a "church" party.  The Tervalons came over after and we played a little Maori.

Saturday we had pancakes for breakfast.  I love that Jason cooks so many weekend breakfasts.

The Tervalon kids were with us for lunch (we were babysitting for Al and Nicole to go to a trade fair.)  Our older two were off with grandma and Grandpa laVanaway at the Nutcracker.  They were apparently very well-bahved (yay!!)  So, I made Oregano Chicken.  Apparently Jason doesn't like it as well as he used to.  As a special treat for me I made white rice instead of brown.  I made seven chicken tenders.  Then Al and Nicole came by right as lunch was getting done.  So, there wasn't really enough for all to be sated but I cut up four apples, too.  Noah ate the extra chicken tender.  Al had a second bowl of rice, as did I.  I do have leftover rice.

As I started to make Oregano Chicken I realized I had no butter so Jason went to the store while I moved on making lunch.  Good thing, too, since I also used up the last of the Soy Sauce and needed more.  Jason bought both before we had lunch but I have put it in the total below.

We played a game of Dominion and they left with plans to return for games that night.  Jason and I grocery shopped.  He was crabby (partially from lack of food, partially from chaos.)

Total grocery money spent for week $61.35

Costco $36.25
Box of canned green beans (the veggie for this whole week)     $7.89
4 lbs of Butter (salted)                                                                 $7.79
2% Milk (2 gallons) we couldn't find 1%                                    $5.59
Apples                                                                                          $5.99
Gouda                                                                                           $9.99

Total                                                                                           $36.25

Lucky $5.84
1 pound salted butter                                                                   $2.95
Soy Sauce                                                                                    $2.89

Total                                                                                            $5.84

Dollar Tree $4.33 (everything is a $1)
Hand soap
Christmas labels
Flossers
Dish Washer Detergent

Nob Hill $14.93
2 pounds black beans                                                               $3.58
2 7 oz. cans of diced green chiles                                            $3.38
Parchment Paper                                                                      $3.69
Cream (2 pints)                                                                        $3.98
Total                                                                                         $14.93

For dinner I cooked three boxes of rice and beans and four cans of green beans.  The Tervalons brought pizza, hot wings and bread sticks.  My kids had already eaten but Jason did enjoy a slice of pizza when he got home from the play with Daitarih about 11 PM.  Kahlan doesn't like pizza, so I thought our option might work for her but she doesn't like rice and beans either.  I have leftovers of both (just a bit.)  We had cookies (from Steve Arnold our next door neighbor) and ice-cream for dessert.

Games played included Othello, Villa Paletti, Dixit, Ticket to Ride and Dominion.

Week 5, Day 7

Today we had oatmeal and cold cerreal.  Actually, only Phyllis and I had cold cerreal.  The other kids were not getting ready quickly so they had oatmeal.  I told them to have cold cerreal they needed to be ready by 8 AM sharp.

For dinner we had leftover beaker soup.  Except Jason, who had cold cereal because there was no more soup when he got home.  He said he was actually looking forward to the soup.  Then he was irrate becuase there were no more real bowls clean (we are down to four children's bowls that are pink plastic and four of our ceramic ones originally from Dollar Tree.)  I told him he could use one of the big containers which assuaged some of his normal irritation of eating out of containers.

Week 5, Day 6 (I just want this week to be over to start fresh on Day 1)

Good old oatmeal for breakfast.  Our good ol' go to.  The kids love it.

Shopped today, too. I did not get cash because we are switching bill pay software and so I did not pay bills like usual.  We were out of town on payday but I could have done today, except for the planned change.  But Jason had to work late (and has to work really early tomorrow) and so now I am not sure when he will get the new software installed so maybe I should just do it.

Costco: $24.36
Milk 5.39
Eggs 7.99
Apples 5.99 (1.08 per pound for Galas)
Greenlees Bread: 4.99

Real Produce: Persian cucumbers $2.04

Nob Hill: Cold Cereal 12.73

Phyllis needs a paper bag for class tomorrow and we don't have any so we had to go to Nob Hill and I bought cold cereal as a splurge.  But really, I didn't do much shopping today.

Also, Heather is slowly moving stuff into her new house.  We walked over and chatted a bit.  Then she said she really had to take her kids home to feed them.  Her hubby wasn't home, Jason is working late so I offered to treat to Taco Bell.  That was $26.22.

Total for the week: $65.35

We had popcorn and greenlees toast for after school snack.

Back to Food Tracking Week 5, Day 5

Our trip to Guatemala was fantastic.  Mostly we ate local cuisine.  We had a ball and I didn't track a food budget.

We got home yesterday in the evening.  Jason and I had leftover Beaker soup.  Presumably this is the same soup I made last Wednesday.  Also in the fridge are leftover beans and rice and baked ziti.  It leads me to think we are very good at using up leftovers.

This morning we had oatmeal and toast.  I went to gt out the oats to microwave some oatmeal and there was yesterday's oatmeal leftovers in the pantry.  Dai said Grandma Lisa must have done that.  Bizarre.  Cress ate applesauce because she has been throwing up all morning.  After a decent time passing of no throw up I let her have a little applesauce.  Poor baby.  I am also drinking leftover teeccino.  I make a pot and stick it in the fridge to nuke daily.

Back to recording all meals.  Back to $125 per week.  I haven't shopped this week and am unsure when I will since Cress is ill today.

Jason has a training class today so he gets free lunch today at work.  The girls took boiled eggs, Persian cucumbers, prunes and dried apples.  Phyllis also took bread and butter.

The dinner plan is leftovers.  Hopefully we will leave enough for Jason's lunch tomorrow.

Food, Again (Imagine that) Week 4, Days 5 and 6

Yesterday we ate oatmeal for breakfast.  Dai and Phyllis routinely eat two bowls.  Lately Cress eats less than one.

For lunch we all packed lunches.  Jason had leftover rice and beans.  Cress and I had crackers and peanut butter, apples, Persian cucumbers.  Dai and Phyllis had PBJ and their choice of produce.

For dinner I made baked ziti.  With a lovely loaf of Italian here it seems a waste not to have pasta.  With it we had frozen zucchini.  There was some left that Dai took in her lunch today.  Cool, huh?  She thought it was cool because it was prepackaged produce.  Yesterday Cress didn't finish her whole apple either so I peeled it, cut it and packaged it.  The girls gladly took it as today.  Prepackaged really helps.

Phyllis has not been eating her whole lunch at school so she finishes it at home.  But then she can't have her treat.  That may be too harsh but I was to incentivize her to finish at school so she is more reasonable at 3 PM.  But recess incentivizes her more.

Today we had oatmeal again but made on the stove top - which I prefer.  For lunch Jason, Cress and I went to Baja Fresh.  Still under my $125 for the week though I have no idea how much it was as Jason paid.  We are moving into vacation mode as we had to Guatemala in mere hours.  :)

For dinner I do not know what they will eat.  Heather will be in charge until Saturday morning.  Then Jason's folks will take over.  I have plenty of food in the fridge.  Heather said she was going to bring chips and they would have nachos one night.  Dai is responsible for microwaving oatmeal each morning we are gone.

Week 4, Day 4

This morning we had leftover pancakes and applesauce.  Making sure to consume leftovers is a helpful part of making your food budget stretch.

The girls had PBJ's made with leftover pancakes in their lunch and half and apple, half a bell pepper and dried apples.  They also each had a Skittles in their lunch.  Phyllis did not finish.

Jason had leftover baked ziti for lunch along with two apples and some of his bread.  Cressida had leftover baked ziti and bread, too.  She had a Persian cucumber while we were shopping to round things out a bit.

I had a baked potato with salsa and sour cream for lunch.

For dinner we had black bean layers.  The girls like that pretty well and I can do most of it ahead of time.  Each girl had two eggs on their first bowl - which was pretty good sized.  Dai ate a second bowl with only one egg and Phyllis ate a second bowl with no eggs.

I also shopped and talked to Heather about groceries for while we are gone.

Groceries so far:  $29.85 plus Del Taco of $8.76 for a total of $38.61

Lucky's: $6.36 for green chilies
Costco: $9.78 for milk (5.39) and sour cream (4.39)
Real Produce: $13.71
  • Cherry tomatoes $1.99
  • Onions 1.79 pounds (3 medium onions) for $.90
  • Beets 2.1 pounds for $2.08
  • Garlic 3 heads for 1.32
  • Persian Cucumbers 13 for $7.42
I also used my grocery money to buy Dai a new coat ($26.99 plus tax at Costco).  I found a decent one at Ross for $21.99 so I may make a swap.  I still need cream which will be another two or three dollars.

I bought slightly less produce as I will not be here so Heather will have to cook it or if she doesn't it may go bad before we get back from Guatemala.

Heather said if she had the baked ziti recipe she would make hat, I also told her I had hamburger and chicken in the freezers.  She asked if we had rice or potatoes or mashed potato flakes.  We had the first two.  Dai will be responsible for making oatmeal for my kids while she is here.  Her kids will have cereal.  My kids are expected to pack their own lunches but I should make muffins before I go to make it easier.  So I will be under budget for this week (but need it for gas to Oakland) and will not do a menu.  I will make Beaker Soup tomorrow or Wednesday because I told Heather I would.  Jason started a loaf of rustic Italian last night.  He will stay up late to finish it tonight.  He started another to leave a fresh loaf for Heather.  We are setting the biga next to the fire to rise - warmest place in our house.  Currently it is 63F in the house.  We all have wool blankets on our beds (as well as other blankets).  We expect the heat will be on while Heather is here but we are, for ourselves, going as long as possible without it.  The fish all have water heaters.

Week 4, Day 3

For breakfast Jason made whole wheat pancakes.  We had fruit syrup that was already in the fridge with it.  Yummy! But we were late for church.  Has more to do with being up until almost 3 AM than the pancakes if were totally honest, though.

For lunch we are having baked ziti.  It wasn't ready when we got home from church which was kind of a bummer but Dai (who stayed home ill) and Jason had been thinking PBJ's so this is better even if later.  I am also cooking the beets but I am not sure they will be done for lunch - maybe dinner.  I had a Gouda and one of Steve's cookies as an after church snack. Jason made whole wheat hearth bread which we may also eat with lunch.

Beets weren't quite done so we had sliced bell peppers instead.  And that bread was AMAZING!!  It was from Peter Reinhardt's Whole Grain Breads book that I checked out from the library.  I was going to return it because Jason hadn't looked at it but he asked me not to and boy am I glad.   He said that recipe needs a brotform pan (on his Christmas list) but I kind of don't want to get him cooking stuff this year.  But it was good even iwthout the special pan.

For dinner we had oatmeal and beets.  Dai also had a PBJ on leftover pancakes.

Week 4, Day 2 (two days after Thanskgiving)

We had peanut butter and toast and bananas for breakfast.  Dai said it wasn't enough food and we had been having that too much lately.  I told her I would make her an egg when she finished if she was still hungry. (She also had two donuts at her Girl Scout event that morning.)  She did end up eating an egg.

For lunch we had rice and beans - Zatarain's to the rescue (and Jason who made it.)

Dinner was turkey soup and Thanksgiving leftovers at the Tervalons.  We took some crackers and jalapeno dip to share.  Nicole made a fresh pumpkin pie, too.

I have not done a meal plan or shopping yet.  Monday is really busy so I think I will have to wait until Tuesday to shop.  Then on Wednesday we leave for Guatemala and the kids will have a sitter - so I am not really sure how much food we need.  I need to check with the sitter, I guess.

Week 4 - the Day After Thanksgiving

Today Week 4 starts, but I hadn't really thought about that until later - much later.

For breakfast I fed the girls cold cereal.  Phyllis and Dai wanted vanilla soy milk rather than milk.  Lisa had asked if there was anything particular she should purchase for our visit and I asked for milk.  But the girls were so excited to get vanilla soy.  They drank it at meals and had it on their cereal.  Then Larry made eggs and potato pancakes.  They need more salt or maybe I eat too much salt.

For lunch they had half a peanut butter and banana sandwich at Grandpa and Grandma's house.  This was because they wanted to go have ice-cream across the street.  But Jason and I did not eat.  We grabbed Del Taco on the way home.  That was $8.67.

We had leftovers at the Tervalons.  Their food was wonderful.

Week 3, Day 6 and 7 - Thanksgiving!!

Yesterday Jason made crepes for breakfast.  He did not have to work and he was telling Dai that all he knew was we were not having oatmeal when crepes were requested.  Jason makes crepes right, too.  He had four pans going.  He never flips them - so nice.  I eat them with powdered sugar and lemon juice.  Dai tried a couple that way.  The other kids just plain or with powdered sugar.  Jason had toast and scrambled  eggs - not enough crepes without making more batches - he originally made a double batch anyway.  Kids also had applesauce.

We took a walk in the AM to go buy the Thanksgiving pie ingredients.  No, I am not counting those as part of my budget.  Jason got us donuts, too.

We had leftovers for dinner but Taco Bell for lunch.  We were in Fremont at City Beach doing rock climbing and the girls wanted to keep going.  That was $19 - which would technically should count as an overage.

Today we headed out to Larry and Lisa's house early.  I was about read to just buy food on the way but good old Jason was gathering up bananas and that got me into the right frame of mind.  I made toast with peanut butter for the girls.  I also sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar (a real treat for them.)  Jason had buttered toast.  I had cinnamon toast.  He is definitely supportive of keeping on budget and that was really it for today for us.

We had Thanksgiving dinner with Jason's folks.  Now the girls are decorating a big house with Grandma.

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Week 3, Day 5

Today we have eggs and toast.  We used the bread Jason made yesterday.  Dai and Phyllis both took their eggs over easy - and yes, they know what that means.  Cress is over medium.  Not that long ago she was an over hard and Phyllis was sometimes.  Dai never has been.

For lunch we played restaurant.  The girls did chores to earn "money."  I made a fancy looking menu and they got to order.  I served and took payment.  Ice-cream cones were $2 of the play money so they had to order accordingly - except we told Cress hers would be on the house.  She put her full energy in but just isn't as fast.  They asked "What's on the house mean?"

Week Three Catch Up

Saturday - Week Three, Day 2

Saturday we had egg burritos.  Yum!  Jason cooked (again!)  He fried up a pound of bacon that we bought quite some time ago.  We have another pound, still I think.  He fried some in strips and fried some in bits to go in with the eggs.  He also put nopales in mine.  Usually he does just eggs but he added bacon in this time.  I think the eggs plain (or with nopales for me) are better.  Him, too.  Bacon can be served on the side./  We used to have tator tots in the breakfast burritos frequently, too.

It is interesting to think how food fads happen in the house.  For several months we always had tator tots on hand.  Now we do not.  We used to eat baked ziti once a week at least and cobre valley casserole very often, too.  Now both of those are less frequent.  When we regularly had cobre valley casserole we also had tortilla chips to top the casserole with always on hand.  I ate a fair share with salsa, too.

Saturday was a busy afternoon.  Dai had a birthday party from 12:30-3:30.  Phyllis had one from 2-4 and I had a bridal shower from 2-4 in Oakland.  I had the car so Jason walked the two younger girls to Stratford (Dai was already at her party) where the Castros were playing soccer (except there was a miscommunication so they had to come back) so they could take Phyllis to the party (it was Lucas's.)  So, Jason forgot to feed Phyllis beforehand (she had a corn dog at Heather's).  He and Cressida had sandwiches.  I had two Goudas before going to the bridal shower because I spent the morning running errands, including getting a gift for the party Dai had.

The shower was lovely and i came home with some vanilla yogurt, the fruit tray and some cauliflower florets.  When I got home, Jason was already making dinner - baked ziti.  A nice thing is that the meal plan allows him to know the plan if I am late.  I put the fruit in a bowl and we had fruit salad and cauliflower florets with dinner.  Jason commented that he had missed the fruit (last week we had no fresh fruit) and ate a good amount of fruit salad and cauliflower.  (I pointed out that he often forgets the fruit even if I do have it, and ironically he forgot it today.)

We finished the chocolate kettle corn and chocolate graham crackers with milk for dessert.

Saturday night Jason also started a loaf of French bread using a recipe he had never tried before.

Sunday - Week 3, Day 3

We had puffed cereal for breakfast.  We were running late (as usual.)  I let the kids have fruit salad with breakfast, too.  That wiped out the rest.

For lunch we had leftovers and the same for dinner.  We ate Taco Fiesta Casserole for lunch.  Cressida chose not to eat.

We had burritos for dinner.  I had some Cuban shredded beef left but hardly any black beans.  I cooked up some rice and cooked it with salsa, the rest of the black beans and my last can of black beans (I still have dried black beans.)  There was only one tortilla left so Jason tried to make some from scratch.  They came out more like flat bread but the girls enjoyed anyway.  I ate one with honey and one with grape jelly.  Healthy, huh?  This left a little rice leftover and the baked ziti.

Monday - Week Three, Day 4

We had rice cereal for breakfast.  I had made extra last night.  We are going through our milk much more quickly this pay period.

For lunch we were at Ela's house for a craft day.  I did take some crackers and jalapeno dip (got rave reviews) and some pita chips I also got from the bridal shower.  I still have a bag left.  Ela made the girls mac'n'cheese and chicken nuggets and green peas served with a few baby carrots.  Jason had leftover baked ziti.

Last night, I was so proud of myself, just before Jason and I went to watch TV, I looked at the meal planner and saw it was pinto bean soup so I started them soaking.  This morning, I ripped off last week's meal plan to discover that it was supposed to be Beaker soup.  Oops!!  But I had pinto beans so we had pinto bean soup instead.

Last time I made it it was dull.  So this time I added 2 tsp of chicken bouillon, increased the cayenne to 1/4 tsp and added a can of green chilies (and forgot the tomatoes altogether).  I would not have added the green chilies except I thought I didn't have bell peppers.  By the time I remembered that I did, I had already opened the green chilies, so in they went.  Now I need more for black bean night.  It was really good.  It had some zip.  I told Dai next time I would omit the green chilies just to see.  Cress and Phyllis put sour cream in theirs which took away any zip.  Only Dai finished.  Since only she finished, I rounded up some quarters from our change jar and sent Jason to get ice-cream.  That was $5 bringing my total over to more than $8, now, plus I will likely need green chilies for black beans - though I could omit them, if pressed.

Jason also finished his French bread.  It is not a keeper. Not bad exactly but a lot more work and not very good.

Week 3 Begins

We had oatmeal and canned fruit for breakfast.  I remember hating that my mom made us eat cracked wheat and home canned peaches every day for so long.  Will my kids have such memories?  I hope not.  They seem to like oatmeal.

For lunch Cressida and I were out and I had only eaten a couple bites of Cressida's oatmeal that she didn't finish for breakfast. So we were out in Campbell - not close to home.  We ate oat.  She had a crepe and I had an open face mozzarella melt.  We each at half of each others.  It was $18.89 bringing me to a total of $106.11 for the week left to spend.  But my meal plan is cheap so I am optimistic.

M - Beaker Soup (need carrots and celery and bouillon)
T - Baked Ziti (have everything)
W - Potato Soup - (need potatoes)
Th - THANKSGIVING so not on the meal plan (joining Larry - not sure what we should bring)
F - Oregano Chicken
S - Beaker Soup
Su - Black Bean layers or leftovers

I lost the Real Produce receipt.  But we got beets, bell peppers, two pounds of campari tomatoes  and broccoli.

Dinner tonight is Fiesta Taco Bake.  Jason and I used to eat this a lot.  The kids have never had it.  Jason made it because I was shopping until late.  Yay!! Eating food i didn't cook and I do not have to feel bad about the spendy.

We ate the Fiesta Taco Bake with sliced tomatoes on the side.  These were inhaled.  Phyllis ate three bowls of the casserole.  The other two did not like it, even when they knew there was going to be dessert.  Dai didn't even touch hers.  Cressida ate a couple bites.

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Week 2, Day 7

We had oatmeal for breakfast.  When the oatmeal ran out the kids were offered canned apricots or applesauce.

For lunch we had Gabriella Castro over.  We had celery cut up into bite size pieces and prunes served with milk and PBJ sandwiches.  Yesterday Jason had made fresh bread but we had a little bit of the old loaf to use up.  Cressida also ate a peanut butter and banana muffin.

For after school snack the girls has bread and butter, using up the rest of the old loaf and starting into the new one.

For dinner we had - drum roll - the Cuban shredded beef burritos!  I finally remembered it.  The day before it was thawed but I hadn't started it in time.  We put leftover black beans on it (Jason took the rest of the black beans and rice to work for lunch and dinner because he had IVL and was there until late.)  We also had cheese and sour cream.  They were good.  Phyllis asked for seconds then only ate a couple bites which drives me crazy since Jason really like the burritos and there were only a few tortillas to begin with and he wasn't home for dinner so leftovers were his best bet.

I also ate some chocolate kettle corn in the evening.

I plan to make peanut butter banana muffins.

Week 2, Day 6

We had leftover white rice for breakfast.  Dai had canned apricots and Phyllis had applesauce after that.  Cress had a PBJ muffin after her rice.  This was a slow morning.  Dai slept really late and I let her thinking she might be ill.

For lunch Cress and I had black beans and rice.  We did not have eggs.

When the girls were packing their  lunches Dai told me she does not like the PBJ muffins.  Phyllis suggested she try a peanut butter banana muffin.  Phyllis told her how good they were.  I was impressed that they dealt with it entirely on their own with no input from me.

For after school snack the girls finished the pumpkin bolani with the dips.  There is still some sweet jalapeno and cilantro chutney left but the mint cheese is gone.  It was wonderful and I may get some more.

I have been craving some serious salt or cheese.  So I made a quesadilla and dipped it in sour cream and salsa.  It was okay - but not really the salt I had been craving.  Because of this craving I debated going to Bogey's for pizza and hot wings.  We have some restaurants.com money there.  But Jason has to work tonight so we just had black beans and rice with eggs again.  I forgot to start the beef until 1 PM - and then it was too late.

Hopefully I will remember tomorrow.

We are running pretty low on milk.  But we did this last two weeks on three instead of two gallons of milk.  I think we had almost a gallon left when we started this pay period so it was three but I only had to buy two.

I will be glad to have fresh produce again on Friday.  Next pay period I expect to be able to get it during each week.

Week 2. Day 5

This morning we had leftover oatmeal or leftover rice for breakfast.  Dai had some of both and then apricots canned by Larry.  Cressida ate half her rice and Phyllis ate all her rice and wanted applesauce but her time was up.  I ate some oatmeal but then Dai wanted more so I gave her most of my bowl.

For lunch Cressida and I had pinto bean soup with toast.  She ate it, an improvement over last night.  Actually Cressida had bread and butter not toast.  This loaf of wheat challa is higher portion wheat than usual but still quite good.  I have only eaten it as toast so no biggie to me.

Dai and Phyllis had PBJ muffins, dried apples (from the cannery), prunes, applesauce and Phyllis also had almonds.  Both took Halloween candy as a dessert.  Phyllis had to finish her prunes and almonds after school.  For after school snack they had peanuts.  I bought a big of them still in the shell, salted a long time ago.  We only have a few cups left now.

Phyllis actually said she didn't want it but when I told her that was it so that or nothing she had some.  Right before Phyllis went to gymnastics I gave her a couple bites of brown rice that didn't get eaten with breakfast and half a bolani (also bought a few months ago.)

For dinner we had black beans over rice with fried eggs on top.  Dai calls it "black bean layers."  When she heard we were having that she just about did a cheer.  She finished her first bowl in record time.  I am also serving it with mixed veggies from frozen.  Oh, and it is over white rice.

We also have a ton of leftovers.  We were supposed to have shredded Cuban beef but i forgot to thaw the meat so I got it out today and we can have that tomorrow.  Then maybe we will not have Thursday's meal since   we will have lots of leftovers.

I have tried a few different black bean recipes.  Tonight I used one as a base and tinkered with it.  I think it is great.  I added molasses but otherwise used their ingredients just in different proportions.

We will have chocolate kettle corn for dessert - or Dai might have her Girl Scout candies she got.

Week 2, Day 4

We had oatmeal with dried apples.  I made it on the stove so the apples would get sufficiently soft.  I put brown sugar on it but Phyllis and Cressida did not like it.  Theirs went into a container.  Dai or I will eat it later.

For lunch we had leftovers.  Love that potato soup.  Cress ate some of the BBQ chicken and rice but not much.

For dinner we had pinto soup.  I thought that recipe had great potential but it was pretty bland.  Beaker soup is really special.  I may try it again but add chicken bullion.  We had toast.

Phyllis also had pizza at Girl Scouts.  Jason picked up ice-cream after he dropped her at Girl Scouts.  I had taken in the recycling for cash and we used some of that.  We got $16.21 and he used $7.  He got Rocky Road and mint chip.

Week 2, Day 3

Today we threw out the goulash.  We tried to spice and moisten it yesterday but it still was totally unappetizing.

We had oatmeal and scrambled eggs for breakfast.  For lunch we had zucchini leftover from before and Zatarian's rice and beans.

For dinner I made potato soup.  So easy but really good.  Boil potatoes in just enough water to cover.  Mix some flour and milk.  Add a little hot ptoato water to that and pour it back in.  Add corn and heat.  We also added shredded cheddar cheese.  It was very good.

Jason had started a loaf of wheat challa in the bread machine but it wasn't done yet so he made cream biscuits.  Took about 25 minutes start to finish.  Yum!!

Cressida did not like the soup but everyone else did.  I have been making this potato soup without the cheese for Jason since way back.  it is one of his favorites.  He asked "Will there be leftovers for my lunch tomorrow?"  There are and he made me feel so good in the process.

This was right in plan with the menu.  I think we are back on track for the week.  Running errands can be a drag.  I am not planning to buy produce unless I must.  The kids will need to do prunes, dried apples, applesauce, etc. for lunches I guess.  I will likely have to get milk before Friday.

Week 2, Day 2

Today was not an ideal day.  The girls were up really early.  Jason had to leave for coaching before 7 AM and he fed them my cold cereal before he left.  Then I took Dai to Girl Scouts at 8.  Cress was still asleep.  I made her toast and woke her up and gave her toast in the car.  Dai had peanut butter on toast and Phyllis had regular buttered toast like Cress. When we got home I fried an egg with more toast for P and C.  I ate three eggs and toast.  Jason had oatmeal before he went to coaching and a donut there.  Then he ate a PBJ when he got home.

This is where it gets bad.  The girls had Open Gym from 12-1:30.  Dai got home from Girl Scouts at 12:35 and from there we took her to change and then go to Open Gym.  I also needed to return my Mephistos.  They did not fit.  So we went to the mall after picking them up and brining them home to change - no one had eaten.  I was returning some expensive shoes so we had money so we went to Del Taco.  That was $23.85 that was not in the budget.  But assuming I take the $38 out for dining last week (which had been planned the week before - so can I?) I will still be under $125 for the week so far. ($93.47 at Winco plus $23.85= $117.32).  Never borrow from next week - better to go cheap the week you eat out - that is my take away.

That was at 4 PM.  There was no dinner.

Week 2 - Shopping Day Setback

We went to Winco.  I need to adjust my mentality a little.  I want to buy "a lot."  I want to stock up on good deals.  That is how I was raised.  But you cannot do that on $125 per week and I go to Winco (fun for me!) so rarely - I really struggled.

I originally spent $105.19.  But I remember that I needed $38 from this week's budget to pay for dinner out last week so I had already overspent ($105.19 + $38= $143.19).  And I still needed milk and produce.  So I returned one jar of peanut butter, two cans of tomato sauce, one package of flour tortillas and the rice cakes for a total of $11.72 netting me at $93.47.

I had bought two peanut butters because it was a good price.  Wrong approach to the staying on budget.  I bought 6 cans of tomato sauce rather than the two on the list because it was a great price.  I bought two packages of flour tortillas because the price was decent and Jason loves to have tortillas around.  If we want to have them around, I need to put it on the list that way not just buy extra.  The rice cakes were for dinner on the way home but I decided we had enough.  For dinner they also munched on prunes and Nilla wafers left from their lunches.

Things on the official list that I bought totaled: $55.97

Flour tortillas $2.74
Baking soda $0.53
Beef bouillon $1.49
Flour, unbleached all-purpose $15.50
Baking powder $0.79
Garlic Powder $1.57
Dutch Process Cocoa $5.03
Chili Powder $0.82
Cinnamon sticks $0.30
Spice Bottle for baking soda $1.39
Sage $0.05
Parsley $0.22
Cinnamon sticks $1.40
Allspice $0.35
Onion powder $0.37
Cayenne $0.15
Penne $3.95
Nutmeg $0.99
Paprika $0.70
Honey $6.82
Tomato Sauce $0.52
Turmeric $1.98
Peanut Butter $4.74
Brown Sugar $3.57

$55.97

Flour is bulk but that is just the way we do it and will probably always do it.  Same with oatmeal.  As such, I probably just need to suck it up.  It is cheaper per week to buy only what we need for the week but so much more expensive per unit.  We store our flour in the freezer except for a small amount in the pantry.  I did need penne but could have bought less.  Regularly I pay between $1.20 and $1.30 per pound but this was $1.01 per pound.  So I bought a lot because I am so rarely at Winco.  But really we will be in Sac for Thanksgiving so I could have done better and waited (granted had I had no off-list items I would hardly be analyzing my failure this week in staying in budget.)

The stuff we bought to eat en route home (we packed lunch and lunched with our cousins but we didn't pack dinner and were headed out a little later than I had originally hoped) was $4.92.  Not too shabby for dinner.  Not totally healthy but I did get grapes and they had their water bottles which we had brought from home and refilled before heading home.

Sesame stix $0.78
peanut butter pretzels $1.72
frosted wheat cereal $0.43
grapes $1.58
cheese and cracker $0.41

$4.92

It was pretty dark when we finally got out of Winco and headed home.  The girls asked would it be sunrise when we got home?  I told them no, but it would be about bedtime.  Then they asked "When will we have dinner?"  I told them they were already eating dinner.  Then Dai talked about how this was what it would be like if we camped on wheels and were headed back home late at night from camping.  Kind of a weird way to look at it - but she's eight so we just went with it.

Things that were not on the list totaled $32.96.

Tomato Sauce $0.52
Zatarain's Rice and Beans $8.88
Baking cups $1.16
Yeast $3.18
Hulled millet $0.76
Toasted wheat groats $2.28
Garbanzo beans $2.67
Brown rice $7.16
Raisins $2.98
Rawhide $2.61

$32.20

So, let me walk through this.  The tomato sauce was easily a third of what I pay at Nob Hill so a spazzed.  Learn to watch that.  Even after returning some groceries, I kept two extras.   We eat rice and beans on Sunday's or as a convenience food.  It is nice to have for weekday lunches and it was easily at least 60-80 cents off what I pay for it.  I like it.  Part of the problem here is I do not meal plan lunches.  We usually eat leftovers, sandwiches, etc.  Something to think about for the shopping list (which is largely based on the meal plan and a few other known issues for school lunches, etc.)  I baked a lot of muffins recently and used up almost all (like all but 5) baking cups.  Good price - but again, need to think better.  Yeast, well, truthfully could have waited.  I should have waited.  Millet and groats were total splurges just to try out a new grain.  Garbanzo beans now are well over a dollar at Nob Hill.  So, I saw them for $1.06 per pound and was excited but I had two pounds at home and only one meal calling for it in my meal plan.  I should have passed.  Brown rice was 61 cents per pound.  We traditionally buy this in 10 pound increments but I may need to rethink bulk for brown rice when I am shopping weekly.  It hurts to pay more per unit (and for flour or oats we won't) but maybe I need to reconsider for rice.  It is in the back of my brain, stewing.  Raisins were just in the canister I like - but we did not need them and I should have left them there.

I wish I had not bought the tomato sauce, the yeast, raisins and garbanzo beans.  I wish I had bought less rice.  I could have brought this down to less than $20 of off-list items which would really have helped.

Rawhide was for Daisy who was waiting so patiently in the car while we shopped.  Good puppy.  It was cool and raining so she was fine but I felt like rewarding her and it was a good price.  I think I need to stock up on that when we go to Sac next but not from the grocery budget.

So, all told $105.19-$11.72+$38 = $131.47.  I am over and still need milk, apples, a bell pepper and Persian cucumbers.  It is cheating but I plan to pilfer some from the gas budget.  I still have $52 there.  Or I could count the $38 eating out as from somewhere else (technically it was paid from another account and we forgot to use the cash from our grocery budget because I left my purse at home).  If I do that I have $125-93.47=$31.53 for produce and milk.

This blog causes me to be a little more accountable.  It was part of what pressed me to do the return.  I knew I would write down exactly where my $125 came from and it wouldn't be pretty.  I think borrowing from a future week is the pits and do not recommend it.

The good news is I will not need to buy spices or flour for awhile.  But I will need meat in the next couple of months.  That also can be expensive because I buy chicken in bulk at Costco.  This is fine so long as I plan it that way so I don't need much else at the same time.

Day 7, Week 1

Well, tomorrow I can shop but I still have quite a bit of food.  I need produce and maybe a gallon of milk.  I need also a lot of staples type stuff.

We have bread flour but no all-purpose flour.  Jason likes unbleached all-purpose which they do not sell in bulk at Costco.  I need brown rice.  I need baking powder and paprika.  I need cinnamon and garlic powder and chicken bullion.  See?  Staple stuff.  Bulk stuff for which I go to Winco.  The nearest one is in Brentwood.  I guess the one in Vacaville is actually 25 miles further but I often go see cousins in Vacaville or Dixon so it makes it well worthwhile.

For breakfast the girls had rice cereal.   They wanted leftover pizza but I couldn't find it (assumed Jason had taken it) but since he didn't they will have it for after school snack.  I had eggs and toast after a walk.

For lunch I had a chicken salad sandwich.  That's four slices of challa today for me.  Jason took leftover goulash and apples to work for lunch.  Cress had her leftover mac-n-cheese from dinner last night and some mango, prunes and pretzels.  Dai and Phyllis took mac-n-cheese muffins, prunes, celery, and a tomato.  Who took what exactly I do not know.  They also each took a bag of Skittles.

For dinner I cooked the freezer BBQ chicken meal.  Not that excellent but we need to eat it.  I will make rice and serve with steamed zucchini.

We did eat BBQ chicken - Jason was not impressed ("Do crock pot chefs have taste buds?") but he already knew we were finishing it up but not planning to do it again.  We served it over rice and we sliced the rest of the tomatoes.  The zucchini was done a little too late and didn't get eaten.

Meal Plan for Next Week:
Sa - leftovers
Su - Potato Soup
M - Pinto Bean Soup
T - Shredded Cuban Beef (need tortillas and 8 oz. can of tomato sauce)
W - Black Bean Layers (need rice)
Th - Beaker Soup
F - Fiesta Taco Bake - need 8 oz. can of tomato sauce, will use elbow noodles we already have rather then radiatore it calls for and we have historically used
Sa - Baked Ziti (need penne)
Su - leftovers

As you can see, I need milk, some produce and little else but this is good because I need all the Winco stuff.

Day 6, Week 1

For breakfast we had rice cereal - this includes milk and cinnamon sugar.  I make my own.  I add a little nutmeg.  A cup and a half sugar, 2 T cinnamon and a 1.4 t nutmeg.  As a kid we separately added cinnamon and sugar and I thought it was wasteful to buy the mix.  But as a mother, I think it is so much more convenient than having two separate containers, to have a single container.  Of course I mix my own.

When I was a kid, we had a sugar container for the breakfast table.  Every once in awhile I think we should now.  And for awhile we did but we haven't for quite some time now.  I think we had it when I was making challa everyday or every other day.  It calls for a 1/4 cup of sugar.

Jason took leftover chicken curry with rice for lunch.  Actually, some of it is fresh made rice.  There was very little leftover last night.  We are having some of what he made for breakfast this morning, in fact.  I use a pressure cooker for rice.  It makes it very easy. He also took an apple.  I wish he would have taken a bell pepper, too.  One cannot eat too much fresh veggies.

I need to either start pinto beans or thaw a freezer meal.  I have been thoroughly unimpressed with the freezer meals but they still need to me eaten.  I guess I will do that.  It is easier and eventually we have to eat it.

The girls have mac-n-cheese muffins, apples halves, prunes and bell peppers (or some mic thereof).  They also got to take a Halloween candy in their lunch.  Dai will not need after school snack today because she is going to ice-cream with her friend Alex Castro.

After exercise I had a banana for breakfast (not enough).  I also got a bagel with tomatoes, cream cheese and capers while Cressida was at gym.  Knowing I will write it down also causes one to think about what I will write - is it healthy or splurgy?  I used the change jar not our food budget for the bagel.   Also, decided to do pasta tonight.  We have a coupon for $25 off a purchase of $50 or more.  So I will pilfer $25ish from next week's budget.  I think that should be doable.

So far, loving shopping weekly.  I think I will not actually like the shopping EVERY WEEK but it has made things easier.  Cressida is a good sport about shopping on Fridays (this Friday no school so all three kids will be with me.)  I like knowing that Friday I can get more produce which is good because the bananas and cucumber are gone.  We have some apples still and some tomatoes.

I actually write this throughout the day.  Interesting because you can see it is noon and I have already changed dinner plans.  But it gets me thinking about it earlier.  Thinking about dinner at 4 is horrible.  That is the worst part of the day.  Energy flagging, husband support not home for a couple more hours, all three kids, homework to remind about, chauffeuring to do.  Blech!  Thinking about dinner in the AM helps a lot.

For lunch I had half a apricot muffin and an apple.  Cressida had half a PBJ and some canned apricots.  With water for both of us.

After school we had some of these muffins Cressida and I had made while the older two were at school.  They are tasty but I encourage you to read the reviews - I made some changes based on them and of course posted my specific changes in my review.  In fact I usually read the reviews before making a recipe - it can be very helpful.  I plan to let my kids take them in their lunches but will keep looking for a healthier recipe (I plan to try the Sneaky Chef one as soon as we get our wheat from the cannery.)  Two awesome things about this recipe 1) my daughter came home with her banana uneaten in her lunch because it got a little mooshed but I sliced it up and put it in and on the few that were not cooked before we left 2) in the middle of the ones cooked while the kids still were at school I put black currant peserves which my kids refuse to eat and I refuse to throw out and there were no complaints about it (yet.)

Yes - I use muffin papers.  Yes they are an extra cost (we didn't usually have them when I was a kid) but they are so much easier for clean up and transporting and you don't have to oil and flour and then you end up still fighting with them to come out of the pan.

Cressida had a banana and Phyllis had some sliced apple, too, for after school snack.

I have been using allrecipes.com for 8 years or more.  At first I never left reviews.  So why did I start? One evening my husband said something to the effect of my not giving back to the online community.  I wasn't sure if he was serious or not but I decided to leave my comments.  Truthfully I wasn't even using social networking back then - MySpace came a few months or a year later for me.  When my sister moved to China it helped us keep in touch without worrying about the time difference and I learned to love blogging there.

Truthfully, I am looking forward to eating out tonight.

Dinner was at The Pasta Market.   Pretty un-noteworthy.  But the girls liked getting lemondae in bottles so they took home the leftovers and put them in their lunches today.  It was $38.  That will have to come out of next week's budget.

Day 5, Week 1

Today we had oatmeal for breakfast.  D and C had raisins.  P had seconds but that was all there was.  I make two cups of oatmeal in the microwave.

I ate puffed cereal and was refilling my container with puffed millet.  So I let D and P have a little because the whole bag wouldn't fit - well, I could have done if I had tried.  The P had applesauce and D had a banana.

Cress hasn't finished her first bowl of oatmeal.  She may not.

She did finish.  Finally she said "can you help me get the last little bits?" I did but also told 2 bites was hardly the last little bits.

After jogging I ate an apple.  Cress and I packed a lunch for pout play date at the mall play space.  I ate a half a chicken salad sandwich and a half a peanut butter and honey sandwich.  It was supposed to be a whole chicken salad sandwich for me and half a peanut butter sandwich for Cress but I messed up and peanut buttered the uncut bread.  I also ate a banana, two Gouda cheeses and two Persian cucumbers.  Cress ate her half sandwich, a Persian cucumber and two bananas.  We took water bottles.  I am pleased because we were out all morning (exercise group, open gym, play date) but I made a point to make lunches rather than grab something on the go.  Mommy -1 , Fast Food - 0.  :)

Dai and Phyllis took the same things in their lunches today which is a little unusual.  A mac-n-cheese muffin, half an apple, a whole bell pepper (full size) and a Persian cucumber.  The still call them mini cukes.

We had applesauce (home canned) and bread and butter (used up the two ends of the last loaf of challa) for afterschool snack.

We will have leftovers for dinner tonight.  Leftover soup, goulash and chicken curry.  Apparently Jason's friend sent Indian food home in the containers from when he took her cake.

Also, no candy for me yet.  I have been high candy since Halloween.  I think it may have contributed to my sudden bout of sleepiness yesterday about lunch time.

And I need to make bread again.  The wheat hasn't come in from the church so it will be white challa again.

Day 4, Week 1

Breakfast was rice cereal.  Dai and Phylis each had two bowls.  They don't even know there are kids who wouldn't eat brown rice.  I love that.  Dai wanted more but there was no more so I offered her canned apricots.  Larry cans them every summer.  I think he likes doing it so he make a tn and then gives us some.  Dai ate four halves and Cressida (who had been asleep while they ate) ate the rest of the quart jar (I tossed the syrup, of course.)

I also started the chicken curry for dinner tonight.  In the crock pot.  A new recipe.  Was supposed to make enough for two gallon Ziploc bags but it was too much for the crock pot so it is all in there now.  It called for mangoes,  i cut up four.  I ate the "extra" part still stuck to the seed of one.  Cress ate three and the meat from her own mango.  She loves mangoes.  She wanted the last mango, too, but I had loaded the knife so I told her to wait.  Then it was lunch time.  I had nibbled on some dark chocolate pomegranate bits (not good for me who is at 186 today - new low!!)  but was hungry.  I had puffed cereal for breakfast.

For lunch we had leftover goulash - Cress ate two bites.  I offered her leftover beaker soup.  I told her she didn't like the goulash last night but she was sure that she like everything but the meat so I let her try it.  She ate a couple bites and then decided I was right.  We also each had a banana.  And a glass of water.

Dai and Phyllis packed lunches today.  They took mac-n-cheese muffins and Persian cucumbers.  Dai took a tomato and half an apple.  (I ate the other half with bites given to the kids with breakfast.)  Phyllis took two cucumbers and prunes.

Tonight I am making fresh food (crock pot chicken curry) but I also have leftovers that need to be eaten up - one serving of soup and a full dinner's worth of goulash.  It is better with salt and pepper.  Should I require them to eat leftovers tonight?  Should I pawn those off on Jason for lunch tomorrow?  Decisions, decisions. But luckily I can decide that later.

On pinterest I found a pinto bean soup that has great potential.  I look forward to that next week.

Chicken curry was bland (no chilies should have been a hint.) Cressida kept asking what soup I was making or saying the soup smelled good.  I told her repeatedly it was not soup but she wouldn't give it up.  D and P ate it over rice.  I sent some with the missionaries (I had signed up to feed them but Jason was not here so they couldn't come in.)  Heather had a few bites - and she was right, the carrots were the best part.  Will not make that again but I have not entirely given up on crock pot foods - it is so easy.  Just these recipes were not good.  We had milk and water with dinner.

After school snack was bread and butter.  I made white challa on Friday and it is still soft and wonderful today.  Cress said, "Can you make this again?  Wait, did you buy or make it?"

Day 3, Week 1

For breakfast P and C had rice cereal.  I like white rice.  White rice is a lot cheaper at Costco, like a third as much per pound.  But there is no fiber and it is a less whole food.  When we first decided to use brown rice rather than white I had to have no white rice option in the house.  Now I can have both and be fine - but as a quality food?  I think brown trumps.  Though it make some interesting diapers if you have a toddler.

Dai and I fasted.  This is her second fast Sunday.  For the first few months she is only fasting one meal.  We read a couple fasting scriptures beforehand.  We open and close together.  Today she looked up "Fasting" in the Topical Guide for us and looked up the second scripture.  We are using her scriptures.  A side benefit is that she may become more familiar with her scriptures this way, too.

For lunch we are having Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice.  It is my Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.  My box convenience food.  It is delicious and convenient but not as cheap as mac'n'cheese - and not as readily available. We also ate one of the boxes of campari's.  Sliced in half with salt and pepper.  About a pound (got a really good deal but they are definitely the end of the season kind of flavor.)

For dinner I have freezer goulash cooking in the crock pot.  I put in too much noodles.  So it may be dry.  But after the BBQ chicken recipe from that same site I am not too optimistic.

Boy! It was not good.  The girls picked at it.  I served a slice of bread and butter to each.  Bread machine challa - all white as we are currently out of wheat.  Man - it is good bread.  Add 2-3 tablespoons of gluten - magnifico!  We will need to eat the other half tomorrow - not looking forward to that.  We ate another pound of campari's.

For lunch and dinner we had "orange drink" (which is some calorie free vitamin drink I got at Costco awhile ago) or milk.  Dai loves orange drink.  Phyllis doesn't like it and Cress is kind of mixed.  I rarely offer milk but did twice today.

I also ate a couple of Gouda cheeses.  They are so good, but with the budget we will see less of them I guess.  Or maybe I will splurge on them.  Truthfully - would be better than the chocolate pomegranate things.  I just love the Gouda.

I like rehashing the food, it causes me to think about it - but at the end of the day today I am kind of tired.  These could become pretty factual and brief pretty quickly.

Day 2, Week 1

Willow stayed the night but came after dinner.  She did have breakfast with us this morning.  We had an option: rice cereal or oatmeal.  Cress and Phyllis had rice cereal.  Phyllis had a second bowl of oatmeal.  Rice cereal is just plain brown rice, leftovers usually, reheated and served with cinnamon sugar and milk.  Willow only ate half a bowl of oatmeal.  On oatmeal we usually serve two spoons of brown sugar and raisins, if you want.

When camping with the Tervalons, Nicole put raisins on her hot cereal and I was shocked at how much she put on.  Then I thought, why not? And now we use a lot of raisins.  We use more sugar than my parents allowed, too.  When I was a kid we got one spoon of sugar, like teaspoon sized.  I read that cold cereal has so many teaspoons of sugar that letting your child have a little on hot cereal was a worthwhile trade off.  Actually it said let your kids put on the amount of sugar they want because it will almost surely be less than in commercial cold cereal.  But I am not sure they counted on cheerios and mini wheats - though we get frosted mini wheats.  Personally I eat puffed kamut - which has far less sugar - but in any event two spoons of sugar it is.

For lunch we had leftovers.  Soup or the noodle concoction of the other night (sorry that entry is in the other journal - prechallenge, so to speak).  Two girls ate noodles.  Cress and I ate soup.  I had toast - Cress passed.  Phyllis ate and said she liked the mac-n-cheese muffin but didn't want it in her lunch.  Dai said she liked it but only ate it to finish so she could have some Halloween candy.  Cress did not like it point blank.

Dinner tonight is BBQ chicken and veggies from the freezer/crock pot recipe.  It doesn't seem particularly promising.  Watery.  I am making rice to go with it.  We shall see.

It was bland.  Not bad but boring.  And none of the girls really card for it.  Yes, it has a lot of veggies, but they are cooked so far down I am not sure they had much nutritional value left.  Maybe next time I will try four hours on high rather than eight on low.

Much Halloween candy today and I opened the pomegranate dark chocolate morsels.  Phyllis finished her candy so the rest has been consolidated into one sharing bowl - hence why I let them kind of gorge today before it all became a free for all.

The Journey Begins

Every year I do a new budget for the next year. I have done this for at least four year's so I think it is a pretty complete picture. Furthermore, I then record actual each pay period. But this year, it is going to be tight. When I say it is going to be tight, it is important that you realize cash flow is a funny thing. For example, we could get an extra few thousand dollars by stopping retirement contributions, but this would result in higher income tax. We could pass on maximizing our HSA (new this year - so a new adventure for us) but this would increase taxes and not be preparing for the future. Or, I could decrease expenses by taking the girls out of gym. Anyway, so when I say it will be tight, understand that some of that is a CHOICE and that I know that so please do not take that as whining.

Jason gets paid biweekly. This results in two weird months but I am otherwise used to it. I have thus shopped every two weeks. I try to set aside some cash for the end when I know we will need milk, eggs and some apples, etc. But inevitably we use it for something else. And this then feels very tight. Part of this is because we are in fact running very lean. Anyway, I was reading something on a blog site when I was looking for recipes last week. This lady says "I set aside $125 a week for our budget challenge." This totally excited me because 1) that is slightly less than half of my two week grocery budget and 2) it had never occurred to me to divide up my grocery cash and shop once per week. But upon hearing it it was SO OBVIOUSLY a good idea. It's like when Nila stored my measuring cups upside down. Wow!! So easy and yet I had never thought of it but it was a much better option than right side up where the balance was all off. Now menu planning can also be done weekly rather than for two whole weeks at a time. Yay!!

So, this Friday is the first pay period of the "challenge." Well, challenge is maybe an overstatement but of the new approach and the $125 per week goal. You should have heard Nila when I told her $125 per week. She thought that was obscenely low for a family of five but I told her I was sure I could do it - but I wasn't sure that would include laundry detergent, tissue paper, garbage bags, etc. Dog food - I am not sure if that is or is not in the $125.  I am considering making homemade laundry and dishwasher detergents.  More on that later if I actually do it.

So, to help me keep honest, I am recording it. Could I use a paper journal? Yes, but electronic writing is easier and blogging has certain attributes that makes it even better than a word processing document - for example, sort ability, each entry having a title and being its own page. Plus, Nila can watch it as I was discussing the idea with her. High powered executive, adventurous, jet setting single woman is nice to be interested in my domestic mother stuff.

Shopping for this week:
Real Produce $32.73
Costco $71.41
Nob Hill $25.10
Nob Hill $1.99
Subtotal: $131.23
Over: $6.23

I love Real Produce. Reasonable prices. Lots of varieties. Locally grown options. Organic options. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had a list. Things I bought that were not on the list but I had planned to get "some other produce" so not a splurge buy - prickly pears, mangoes (Cressida loves them, I needed two bought six), melon and bananas from the $1 bin, Persian cucumbers, tomatoes (99 cents for a pound of Camparis!)

4 $1 bags - squash and bananas (bruised but otherwise fine)
yellow onions - 3.67 pounds for $1.84
campari tomatoes - 3 lb for $2.97
Altufo mangoes 6 for $7.74
Red beets 2.51 pounds for $2.48
Bell peppers 10 for $7.57 (priced by the pound but I bought 10 so it was that not the pounds that counted)
Prickly pears 1.91 pounds for $1.89
Yam .78 pounds for $.76
Persian cucumbers 10 for $3.48 (priced by the pound but I bought 10 so it was that not the pounds that counted)

Costco I actually had a non-grocery buy of $14.60 for trash bags but I am splitting it with my friend so she will give me $7.30 which will bring me back under $125. And that is including non-grocery item!!  Plus I had two or three splurge purchases.  Two were clearly splurges: chocolate kettle corn and dark chocolate pomegranate seeds ($15 total).  The third was Monterey Jack cheese (about $6 or $7).  We do not use it often but never have it when I need it - so I thought it would be good to get even though strictly speaking it is not needed for meals this week.

Milk - 2 gallons for $5.39
Apples - 9.99 for 12 apples (honeycrisp)
Eggs - 5 dozen for $7.29
Cheddar cheese (ungrated) 2 pounds for $5.39
Jack cheese (ungrated) 2 pounds for $5.39
16 cans of diced tomatoes for $7.59 (coupon buy one get one free)
Garbage bags 200 13 gallon with drawstring for $13.49 (split half with Tess so $7.30 net after tax and reimbursement)
Dark chocolate pomegranate bits $9.99
chocolate kettle corn $4.89

Nob Hill. I like Nob Hill. Even our small one. I do not like Lucky. I love the big Nob Hill which is where I went today. I bought noodles, cream, tomato sauce and rump roast. The rump roasts were not there so I had to ask the meat guy and he said someone had just bought the last but he was cutting more and they would be out in a minute. Nob Hill folks are much friendlier than has ever been my pleasure at Lucky. I could have gotten noodles and tomato sauce cheaper at Grocery Outlet but it is farther away. The noodles weren't too badly priced. The cream was a steal at $1.99 per pint, we got three. Yes, cream is a staple in our house. Weird, I know. But the second Nob Hill is because I forgot to get a red bell pepper at Real Produce (wasn't on my list) so the two big girls went down on their bikes to get it. They had to go twice. The first time they got a green (I had bought 10 of those today) and so they went back and exchanged it for red. Dai thought green, but Phyllis thought they were supposed to get red. Oh, well, live and learn. Their riding in a buddy team to Nob Hill (no roads to cross) is very helpful to me and Dai says it makes her feel like a "really big girl." She actually said that one time when I waited in the parking lot when she ran in to get something by herself. (Smile and reminisce)

Tomato sauce (8 oz) $0.79
Macaroni - 4 pounds at $1.28 each
Whipping cream 3 pints at $1.99 each
Rump Roast $9.74

But I think we will not need anything more until next Friday. To be totally fair, a couple weeks ago we had some excess so I bought stew meat, chicken, hamburger, etc. That will help fill in for a bit as I make my $125 stretch.

Last night we had Beaker Soup. We sued to literally eat this 4-5 nights a week and often for lunch, too, when Zack and Crys lived with us and some before, too. It is cheap food. Healthy food and very good. Someone asked if we got tired of it and I think not. We usually had fresh bread machine challa to go with it and it is tasty. Having it last night made me wonder why I had not made it in so long. The girls heard we were having it again for dinner tonight and that was met with much rejoicing. It is a simple one pot meal. Barley, garbanzo beans, veggies and seasonings. Of course it calls for canned garbanzo beans but I cook from dry. Once upon a time I did it on the stove top! Yikes. Then I used a pressure cooker on the stove top. Back then I would cook up beans in huge batches and freeze them to throw in soups and stuff later. Now I have an electric one - better still. I still try to remember to pre-soak but it isn't totally necessary. I love my electric pressure cooker. Beans are cheap food and it makes them much more doable.

Ok, so one soup made yesterday made two dinners (no Jason either night and he didn't need leftovers for lunch today) and there is still some left in the fridge.

Tonight I prepared a couple of frozen meals that I will throw in the crock pot. Tonight was supposed to be freezer mac-n-cheese but we had leftovers instead. We have never had freezer mac-n-cheese so we shall see. I made a BBQ chicken and veggies one. No commercial BBQ sauce but truthfully Jason doesn't like BBQ sauce so we will have this the first time tomorrow while Jason is in DC, but there is at least another day's worth in the freezer. I also did freezer goulash. I cooked twice as many noodles as I needed. Again, learned where to find how much dry noodles makes how much cooked noodles (but unfortunately too late for that recipe). Love the Internet!! Anyway, those freezer bags are way too full. But that is another day or two's worth of food in each of the two bags. Also a recipe we have never had. Finally, I made mac-n-cheese muffins tonight. And am done until tomorrow.

My kids pack lunches every day. They are good about it. I pack little containers of pretzels, almonds, prunes, etc. This helps make it easier for them to pack. They are really good about three produce items every day. Yes, I count prunes as one. Sometimes they can take applesauce as one. Often they take a stalk of celery, a carrot (they waffle between big ones and liking baby ones), grape tomatoes, Persian cucumbers (original we called them baby cukes until Costco quit carrying them and Real Produce had them as Persian cucumbers), mini bell peppers, pickles, apples, bananas or oranges. We more consistently have veggies than fruit in the house. They do not question why three? They take three. Sometimes Phyllis takes string cheese. Dai finds it gets too warm and soft so she does not.

Sandwiches are where they struggle. Hard to make. Usually makes a mess in the process. Do we have bread? Do we have crackers (peanut butter crackers counts, too). I made pizza bites and they took those for awhile. Sometimes they take leftover pizza (if we have it and Jason isn't taking all of it). One time Phyllis took leftover something else - pasta maybe? Sometimes they take boiled eggs in lieu of a sandwich. But, it always comes back to sandwiches. So I found some alternatives. PBJ muffins (will make later) and mac-n-cheese muffins. Both come from the Sneaky Chef. She is all about sneaking veggies into meals. My kids are more than willing to eat fruits and veggies so I do not need to trick them into it but these two recipes call for pureed carrots and yams, so I am doing it. I hope the girls like them. This could be another easy option for in lieu of a sandwich.

So that is what we bought and what we ate so far.

There are other food items that may be an issue.  we buy oatmeal at Winco.  This can be pricey.  Cheap per pound but 25 pounds or whatever still adds up.  I also found Costco did not have chicken bullion today.  Last time I got it it was there.  Being a soup person I use a lot.  I expect I will get it at Winco.  We buy flour in big bulk, too.  We buy hard wheat from the church storehouse.  Cheap per unit and handy (Jason grinds fresh wheat flour when he make bread), but pricey to do periodically.  The occasional big bulk could be hard.  And I have no idea how to do meat.  Smaller purchases I guess even though it will be more per pound.  Or maybe sometimes I will be able to get some extra to really stock up and count it outside of the $125.  What an adventure to learn about what we really spend on groceries.  I am excited.
