For breakfast we had rice cereal - this includes milk and cinnamon sugar. I make my own. I add a little nutmeg. A cup and a half sugar, 2 T cinnamon and a 1.4 t nutmeg. As a kid we separately added cinnamon and sugar and I thought it was wasteful to buy the mix. But as a mother, I think it is so much more convenient than having two separate containers, to have a single container. Of course I mix my own.
When I was a kid, we had a sugar container for the breakfast table. Every once in awhile I think we should now. And for awhile we did but we haven't for quite some time now. I think we had it when I was making challa everyday or every other day. It calls for a 1/4 cup of sugar.
Jason took leftover chicken curry with rice for lunch. Actually, some of it is fresh made rice. There was very little leftover last night. We are having some of what he made for breakfast this morning, in fact. I use a pressure cooker for rice. It makes it very easy. He also took an apple. I wish he would have taken a bell pepper, too. One cannot eat too much fresh veggies.
I need to either start pinto beans or thaw a freezer meal. I have been thoroughly unimpressed with the freezer meals but they still need to me eaten. I guess I will do that. It is easier and eventually we have to eat it.
The girls have mac-n-cheese muffins, apples halves, prunes and bell peppers (or some mic thereof). They also got to take a Halloween candy in their lunch. Dai will not need after school snack today because she is going to ice-cream with her friend Alex Castro.
After exercise I had a banana for breakfast (not enough). I also got a bagel with tomatoes, cream cheese and capers while Cressida was at gym. Knowing I will write it down also causes one to think about what I will write - is it healthy or splurgy? I used the change jar not our food budget for the bagel. Also, decided to do pasta tonight. We have a coupon for $25 off a purchase of $50 or more. So I will pilfer $25ish from next week's budget. I think that should be doable.
So far, loving shopping weekly. I think I will not actually like the shopping EVERY WEEK but it has made things easier. Cressida is a good sport about shopping on Fridays (this Friday no school so all three kids will be with me.) I like knowing that Friday I can get more produce which is good because the bananas and cucumber are gone. We have some apples still and some tomatoes.
I actually write this throughout the day. Interesting because you can see it is noon and I have already changed dinner plans. But it gets me thinking about it earlier. Thinking about dinner at 4 is horrible. That is the worst part of the day. Energy flagging, husband support not home for a couple more hours, all three kids, homework to remind about, chauffeuring to do. Blech! Thinking about dinner in the AM helps a lot.
For lunch I had half a apricot muffin and an apple. Cressida had half a PBJ and some canned apricots. With water for both of us.
After school we had some of these muffins Cressida and I had made while the older two were at school. They are tasty but I encourage you to read the reviews - I made some changes based on them and of course posted my specific changes in my review. In fact I usually read the reviews before making a recipe - it can be very helpful. I plan to let my kids take them in their lunches but will keep looking for a healthier recipe (I plan to try the Sneaky Chef one as soon as we get our wheat from the cannery.) Two awesome things about this recipe 1) my daughter came home with her banana uneaten in her lunch because it got a little mooshed but I sliced it up and put it in and on the few that were not cooked before we left 2) in the middle of the ones cooked while the kids still were at school I put black currant peserves which my kids refuse to eat and I refuse to throw out and there were no complaints about it (yet.)
Yes - I use muffin papers. Yes they are an extra cost (we didn't usually have them when I was a kid) but they are so much easier for clean up and transporting and you don't have to oil and flour and then you end up still fighting with them to come out of the pan.
Cressida had a banana and Phyllis had some sliced apple, too, for after school snack.
I have been using allrecipes.com for 8 years or more. At first I never left reviews. So why did I start? One evening my husband said something to the effect of my not giving back to the online community. I wasn't sure if he was serious or not but I decided to leave my comments. Truthfully I wasn't even using social networking back then - MySpace came a few months or a year later for me. When my sister moved to China it helped us keep in touch without worrying about the time difference and I learned to love blogging there.
Truthfully, I am looking forward to eating out tonight.
Dinner was at The Pasta Market. Pretty un-noteworthy. But the girls liked getting lemondae in bottles so they took home the leftovers and put them in their lunches today. It was $38. That will have to come out of next week's budget.
